Today, March 5, we want to wish you a Happy World Energy Efficiency Day!
We are currently suffering from major environmental problems and therefore, on a day like today it is important to remember the importance of reducing our carbon footprint in daily activities.
Do you know how much energy we use per year?
A single-family house spends approximately 15,513 kWh while a block of flats spends 7,544 kWh on average (Ecoinventos, 2020). In total per year we spend 9,922 kilowatt-hours (kWh) in Spain. Of course, if we multiply it by all the inhabitants of the planet we can discern that we are expending a large amount of energy.
And it is that the environmental problems that we are suffering are no longer fixed just by recycling well, we must learn to make efficient use of energy. This is why World Energy Efficiency Day is celebrated.
Things that can be done to reduce our energy consumption:
- Use energy efficient appliances: For some time now, companies have been trying to reduce their carbon footprint and therefore many of their products consume less energy than before. Do you remember the light bulbs? Now almost no one uses the “normal”, in fact you will find few in the market of this type. Most are already LED.
- Disconnect the charger from your mobile: not only the mobile charger, all the devices that you do not use because they use energy no matter how little. For example, the television, that light that stays on in red that tells you that it is off, that spends.
- Eat less meat: It is a difficult task to do but we have to be aware that many of the processes to obtain this meat make a very large use of energy. For example, the transportation of meat.
- Keep the car in good condition: in case you did not know, cars in worse condition spend more, and therefore expel more greenhouse gases than a car in good condition.
- Remember the three r’s: reduce, reuse and recycle. By now it is the daily bread but it is never bad to remember it again.
